What is a skin consultation?

A skin consultation is a structured clinical assessment. It is not a sales appointment, and it should not feel like one. The purpose is to understand your skin's current condition, your concerns, your history, and what — if anything — may be appropriate for your situation.

At a well-conducted consultation, the practitioner will gather a detailed clinical history. This includes any relevant medical background, medications you may be taking, any allergies or previous reactions to treatments, your skincare routine, and your lifestyle factors such as sun exposure and diet.

What questions should you prepare?

Coming prepared helps you get more from your consultation time. Consider noting down:

- What specific concerns brought you in today? - How long have you had these concerns? - Have you had any previous aesthetic or dermatological treatments? - Are you on any medications, including supplements? - Do you have any known allergies or sensitivities?

There are no right or wrong answers. The purpose is to give your practitioner the clearest possible picture of your situation.

What happens during the assessment?

After taking your history, the practitioner will assess your skin clinically. This may involve examination under specialised lighting, photographs for your clinical record (taken with your consent), and a discussion of what is observable.

This is also your opportunity to ask questions. A good consultation is a two-way conversation. You should feel comfortable asking about the reasoning behind any recommendations, the evidence behind proposed treatments, realistic expectations, and potential risks.

What happens after your consultation?

You will typically receive a summary of findings and, where appropriate, treatment recommendations. It is entirely normal — and encouraged — to take time to consider any recommendations before committing to anything. A reputable clinic will never pressure you to book immediately.

If a treatment plan is proposed, it should be explained in terms of goals, steps, realistic timelines, and costs. Ask for this in writing if you would find it helpful.

A note on expectations

Aesthetic medicine can achieve meaningful improvements for many people, but it is not a solution for every concern, and outcomes vary between individuals. Your practitioner should give you an honest assessment of what may be achievable — and what may not be — in your specific case. If the expectations presented seem unrealistically optimistic, that is worth taking note of.
